More than 98,000 people across the United States are on a waiting list for an organ transplant. More than 44,000 of them -- nearly half -- are from minority populations. 490 New Mexicans await organ transplants, 79% are minorities. Medical conditions leading to the need for transplants, such as diabetes and hypertension, occur with greater frequency in minority populations. Patients on the national waiting list are most likely to find well-matched organs within their own racial/ethnic group, but 70% of U.S. donors are Caucasian. More minorities donors are needed to transplant minority patients. The need for minority donors is critical. In the U.S., Hispanics/Latinos represent 12% of the U.S., but 17% of patients awaiting kidney transplant, and African Americans represent 13% of the U.S. population, but 35% of patients awaiting kidney transplant. In New Mexico, Native Americans represent 10.5% of the population, but 34% of patients awaiting kidney transplants, while Hispanics/Latinos represent 42% of the New Mexico population and 41% of patients awaiting kidney transplants.
