Art, Heart Recipient

Art is a talented potter, Vietnam War veteran, family man, and heart transplant recipient. He has lived in the Laguna area most of his life. In 1993, Art underwent a four-way heart bypass operation, less than a year later, he needed a heart transplant to live.

In his pottery, Art uses the eagle dancer as his trademark. In American Indian tradition, the eagle is one of the most honored birds, and is the messenger between heaven and earth. Before his operation, Art was afraid of death, but not anymore. His heart transplant has given him the opportunity to be here for his family, especially his grandchildren. He is extremely grateful to his donor family for extending his life.
